Our History

Getting injured during battle isn't a new concept, but with advancing military weapons, more and more soldiers are suffering from injuries that go beyond what we can see. Roadside bombs, and numerous blasts are causing Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) on an exponential level. Many service members coming home from war zones are also suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Like thousands of other service members before him, Adam, a 27-year-old Marine was injured while bravely serving in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. An all-too-common bomb blast left him with a TBI. Luckily, hope was right around the corner. Adam heard of a doctor who was well-known for treating injured veterans, and his specialty treatment called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) that offered TBI victims a new chance at life. To his relief, Adam was referred to Dr. Allan Spiegel for treatment.

As a practicing Neurologist for over 25 years, and a specialist in Hyperbaric Medicine for the past 12 years, Dr. Spiegel knew he had the tools necessary to help this heroic soldier. But Dr. Spiegel faced a familiar road block. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs would not cover the cost of Hyperbaric Therapy. Like he's done so many times before, Dr. Spiegel offered to donate his services to Adam.

As Dr. Spiegel predicted, Adam's therapy was a success, and this young hero returned to a productive civilian life. The experience, however, left Dr. Spiegel with a familiar feeling; enough is enough. With a renewed energy for change, he traveled to Washington numerous times appealing for assistance in providing needed services to our wounded veterans, only to find frustration and delays. But there was hope...

After speaking with other medical providers, key military personnel, and congressional leaders, Dr. Spiegel found similar stories of needed treatments, but non-existent funding. He also discovered that, like himself, his peers wanted to make a difference in the lives of these veterans as well. With a passion to help those who protect and serve our nation, Dr. Spiegel formed the Healing Heroes Network.
